Preventative Dentistry

Preventing Problems

Studies show that in the United States, 25% of adults have untreated cavities and 50% have some level of gum disease. Many of these adults are unaware of the fact that they have a problem. Left untreated, these issues can lead to a number of more serious problems. Regular dental care and a good oral hygiene routine are important for keeping your teeth in the best condition possible and maintaining your overall physical health.

Home Care

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth twice daily for at least two minutes with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. You can use either a manual or electric toothbrush, although electric brushes are often better at removing food particles and plaque. Flossing your teeth once daily and using mouthwash with fluoride will also help your teeth and gums stay healthy.

Professional Dental Care

The ADA recommends scheduling a preventive checkup and cleaning once every six months. Our staff will perform several procedures during these appointments. When you arrive at your six month checkup and cleaning at Amazing Smiles Dentistry, the first step is the scaling of your teeth to remove the plaque and tartar that builds up between cleanings. Next, your teeth will be polished to help remove stains from coffee, tea, or tobacco products. Afterwards, a fluoride treatment is applied to protect your teeth against cavities. X-rays may be taken for examining areas not visible in the mouth, which can be used to discover any changes that may occur between visits. The last step will be a complete oral examination to look for signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other problems. The dentist will discuss the findings with you and will answer any concerns or questions you may have.

Properly caring for your teeth will help prevent health problems not only in your mouth, but also throughout your entire body. Taking the time to establish a proper dental care routine today will lead to a lifetime of good physical health.
